A patient had the following to say about Amber:

“I want to thank the midwives and doctors, especially Amber Borg, for helping me deliver my beloved baby on 21/05/22. When I was in labour, Amber constantly explained what she and the team were doing. She asked questions and would tell me what I needed to do, demonstrating her accountability and respect for me and the safety of both myself and my baby. But what amazed me the most about Amber is her contagious compassion. She’s so passionate about providing care to her patients. She’s full of energy, and even though it was midnight, she was there beside me, taking care of me, completing lots of paperwork, and buddying up with a midwife student. She consistently demonstrated confidence, knowledge, and high standards of care. Even when she handed me over upstairs, her parting advice and information were very touching and made me feel like she was not only a midwife fulfilling her role but also a family member and friend. Once again, thank you, Amber. You made my experience at JKWC hospital so memorable.”

Enrolled Nurse – Ward 2A

“Amrit came to Ward 2A as part of a graduate program and is now a permanent team member. Amrit is an exceptional employee and human on so many levels it is difficult to isolate one particular example or characteristic; however, I will highlight the most consistent and the one that I think most impacts, everyone. COVID has added many pressures to the ward, the network, and beyond. People are stressed, tired and at times overwhelmed. Some people have the ability to sense when others need someone to give them a moment, a kind word, a helping hand, support, someone to listen, AND also the desire and willingness to provide what they sense the other needs. Amrit is one of these remarkable people. It’s what makes him such a fantastic nurse and an exceptional colleague!! Amrit should be heralded for the difference he makes in so many people’s lives every day!”

“Ann is always happy to share her knowledge and clinical reasoning/skills with all Occupational Therapists and Allied Health Assistants to continue our growth within our profession and her own. Ann is a great advocate for all patients she treats as she provides and continues to provide ‘best care’ and better outcomes for patients that come to Footscray Hospital, particularly those on Ward 1W. I know the 1 West team appreciates her as much as her department. Ann continues to provide high standards of care to all patients despite all the changes and challenging times. Ann has grown and shown exceptional leadership skills during the last few years and the pandemic, particularly during December 2021. She supported her team by listening, providing guidance, and helping others with their workload to ensure patient care was not compromised. Ann has made me feel like a valuable team member, and her willingness to listen and trust my point of view regarding patient care, discharge planning, etc., has helped build my confidence and knowledge within my profession. I am proud to work with someone who is a valuable, caring individual, colleague, and friend. Ann hasn’t complained once or taken a day off during this crazy time and continues to show leadership skills, positivity, and a smile every day she comes to work. I believe Ann should be acknowledged for her hard work, dedication, and consistent display of the Western Health Values – Compassion, Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Safety, and most importantly, her contribution to a positive workplace. Thank you for all you do, Ann, and always remember you are a valued team member and an extraordinary human being who is greatly appreciated by those you work alongside.”

She also was proactive in refreshing her cardiac knowledge, which hopefully gave her increased confidence when she returned to LWW. An displays compassion for patients by advocating for their wellbeing. She was proactive in connecting patients with their families during the COVID pandemic and would spend time with each patient to provide support. “Callum is a highly dedicated clinician who truly goes above and beyond with our complex cohort of patients. I have observed Callum making time for others even during the busiest of days, tailoring his approach and recommendations to each patient, involving relatives and friends, and ensuring that the patient’s wishes and beliefs are met. He also advocates many “out of the box” ideas/plans to optimise his patient’s safety involving all members of the multidisciplinary team. The time he spends supervising students will see them learn a great deal during their rotation with him and become better OT’s in the future. Nothing is too difficult for Callum to troubleshoot, and during team planning meetings, he is engaging and works very well with all the other clinicians on the ward. Callum truly provides holistic and comprehensive patient-centred care to those directly under his care and helps fellow OT staff with their patient allocation. Thank you so much, Callum, for all your efforts for our patients. Keep up the great work.”

Chelsea received two nominations for an Inspire Award:

Nomination 1:

“In a short period of time (July at time of submission), Chelsea has already created such a positive workplace culture change. For a senior staff member who I imagine has so many time pressures, she is readily available and easily approachable. She has enthusiastically nurtured opportunities for learning and growth, demonstrating her strong values of accountability and excellence. I appreciate her compassion, generosity of time, and sharing of knowledge to better my skills as a clinician as well as my general confidence in myself. After spending so much time doing primarily patient work during COVID over the last few years, it feels really exciting to have quality improvement projects back into rotation.”

Nomination 2:

“Chelsea has maintained a beam of positive energy between the Footscray and Sunshine acute OT teams. As many of our quality projects changed tack or were placed on hold over the past 2 years she has demonstrated compassionate and respectful leadership in supporting the team to continue with this work alongside our clinical load. Chelsea models a commitment to excellence and safety in supporting staff with quality processes to provide the best service we can for our patients.”

“Dayna has always been a level-headed and approachable Registered Nurse that has supported students excellently. When asked if she ever does any nurse in charge shifts as I knew she would be capable. Dayna said, “no, I am here for the patients; that is what I care about.” Later that day, I walked past her holding a patient’s hand and talking tenderly to the elderly patient. The support shown was beautiful. I have seen Dayna compassionately advocate for her patient’s best interests, and she is a nurse that I would want caring for my loved ones. Dayna is patient-focused, an excellent team player, respects and supports all around her, and provides stability to ward 1A. Dayna is proactive in her professional development, participates in research to better nursing, and shares knowledge with others. Dayna is a very important cog in this wheel at Western Health.”

Director – Safety, Risk, Emergency Management

“My sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the day after I was offered my role at Western Health, so for almost a whole year, that was a huge focus for me. James was very understanding and flexible, which enabled me to attend appointments. When my sister went into palliative care and then passed away, James was really caring, reaching out to me and expressing his concern that I did not return to work too soon. I have felt so supported and believe he has modelled Compassion first and foremost, has Respected the difficult work/life balance that I’ve juggled, and has been concerned for my psychological Safety. He’s undoubtedly modelled the organisation’s value of Excellence in caring for staff members. I might add that this all occurred while another team member lost a family member, and we had several staff changes during this period. I know that these values are about James as an individual, but I’m so pleased to work for an organisation where leaders act in such a caring manner.”

Judy demonstrated Excellence when she reintroduced the high quality, evidence-based, and well-loved aquatic sessions for our Sunshine hospital subacute inpatients. Her passion for this project didn’t come without its challenges. She addressed Safety by going above and beyond to tick all necessary boxes to enable this to occur in an unprecedented time of infection prevention. While the pool has been closed, Judy has ‘pivoted’ to provide outstanding support to our Inpatient Rehabilitation physiotherapy team, sharing her knowledge and skills in amputee rehabilitation and supporting our team’s education with this new patient group. Despite a significant change in her job description, Judy demonstrates Accountability in whatever role she takes on. She not only moved to work in a new team but increased her work hours to support this team further. All members of the team value her Compassion. She has supported many staff through a very challenging time and provided supportive guidance (and just the right amount of firm encouragement) to her patients.”

I was really struggling with being bed bound and having to use a bed pan. He made every effort to make sure he got me onto the commode so that I was comfortable. He respected my dignity and always reassured me nothing was too much trouble. He is certainly one of a kind and an absolute asset to your hospital. I hope he is recognised for his efforts.”

Clinical Nurse Consultant – Infection Prevention

“For the first time, Victorian Health legislation mandated the influenza vaccination for all Category A and Category B healthcare workers in 2022, a significant change from Western Health’s previous influenza campaigns and a vital strategy for maintaining the safety of our patients, staff, and community. Katerina put her hand up to take on the Influenza Vaccination Coordinator role. During this time, we transitioned paper-based consents to an electronic system, entered vaccines into Air, and created lots of communication, including redcap surveys to capture information and data and a Map platform for managers to access staff vaccination information. Nurse immunizers (including roving immunizers) have also been available to our staff. Western Health acheived an amazing 97% of category A&B staff are influenza vaccinated, a record for our organisation, which would not have been achievable without Katerina’s hard work and dedication at the helm of this campaign.”

Katherine is a highly valued and respected colleague who collaborates widely with the team. She demonstrates accountability through her commitment and dedication to getting the job done despite the ever-changing guidance and messaging typical of COVID. Katherine delivers high-standard work, often juggling multiple priorities and requests in a high-pressure environment but always with goodwill and a positive can-do attitude.”

She is always friendly and quick to smile. She is very compassionate and demonstrates this through her empathy towards the neonates in the newborn services department, a trait that some parents in the neonatal ward have noticed too. Kerrie demonstrates excellence by being more than willing to assist in teaching new parents fundamental skills in their journey in parenthood, and sometimes it’s as simple as showing them how to handle their newborn confidently. New parents and staff learning from Kerrie often walk away empowered by their new skills.”

Clinical Nurse Consultant – Infection Prevention

“Kim has been amazing to work with during the COVID surges. She is a very calm and reassuring presence on the wards, gives sound and understandable advice, and is always willing to visit different departments to review infection prevention principles and plans. In particular, Kim has done a wonderful job producing the COVID zoning maps as needed over the past few years and gave an outstanding zoom presentation to all wards regarding this concept. Kim’s contribution to a positive workplace is evidenced by her ability to listen to staff concerns, explain infection prevention principles, and role model excellent and evidence-based practice. She is very supportive to all staff and has assisted me many times when visiting the wards during the COVID surges. Compassion/Respect – Kim listens, cares, and respects all staff and patients. She explains things clearly and sensibly, assisting in easing others’ concerns. Her demeanor is always very pleasant and positive. Accountability – Kim ensures infection prevention policies and procedures are in place and followed to the highest standard possible. She has also appropriately escalated concerns so they can be followed up, which is greatly appreciated and an asset for us. Excellence – Kim’s commitment to Western Health and, in particular, infection prevention principles throughout the past few years have been outstanding. She has a depth of knowledge that she is happily and readily able to pass along to others. She has produced numerous documents, maps, and zoom presentations regarding infection prevention during COVID and responds quickly to the changing environment. Every time I’ve asked, Kim has always visited the wards to review their infection prevention practices, and she always takes time to speak to the staff and educate/update them about the latest changes. Safety – By nature of her role, Kim contributes to the safety of all staff, patients and visitors. She takes this role responsibly and professionally and doesn’t hesitate to point out unsafe behaviours and advocate for safe behaviours. Kim is an inspiration.”

Leonor is accountable for the highest quality of service provision. She leads by example, ensuring that she and the team are updated with annual competencies. Leonor is responsive to any feedback provided to the CTC. She has been key to developing and rolling out testing strategies that enable staff to test on their WH site to reduce the hours lost due to travel for testing at Sunshine. Leonor is responsible for collecting, maintaining, and submitting data to the Department of Health from the public testing sites operated by Western Health. Leonor is respectful in her interactions with the public or staff that present for testing and is mindful that for some people, COVID testing is stressful. Leonor is always respectful in all her communications and models this as an example for her team to follow. Leonor has maintained an excellent service in a dynamic environment with several stakeholders. She manages both public testing with Department of Health requirements and staff testing with Western Health oversight. Leonor has, at short notice, set up testing at Footscray and Williamstown to provide staff at these sites access to the same level of surveillance testing as Sunshine. At all times, the safety and well-being of staff and clients are Leonor’s focus. She has always sought OH&S and infection prevention consultation to ensure that the COVID testing clinics operate at the highest possible standard.”

Workforce Learning, Culture and Wellbeing Coordinator

“Not much thought is given to how the wellbeing programme happens, how the donated goods get delivered to staff, and whose idea it is to supply beanies and gingerbread cookies to Western Health staff in the dead of winter. My nomination is for the person who cares about making our day just a little bit brighter and spreading some fun and joy. Leesa Cooke! What might not be obvious is how much is involved in developing the concepts, their implementation, and delivery. Leesa cares about Western Health employees and puts considerable effort and kindness into what has made the last couple of COVID years more bearable. In addition to her pop-ups, which have included Mr Whippy soft serve, Easter eggs, Footy Colours Day, donuts, endless coffee vouchers, and perhaps her most creative idea; Winter Wonderland beanies and cookies, she cares deeply that people have the resources to get assistance, talk to someone and a multitude of other tools to help struggling staff. I’ve been the recipient of a few of her ‘how are you doing? Anything I can do?’ visits. In the first wave, it was Leesa who organised the delivery and distribution of goods, meals and donated food. Although others assisted her, it was no small feat to coordinate the endless donations from our grateful community. It would have been a lot less fun around here without her. She is available for anyone at any time. She regularly works for the team and all at WH on her day off. She reaches out to those who have been doing it tough out of hours and lets the right people know in the most confidential and respectful way when things are not right, or someone is not right. She is always looking at ways to improve or make things better. “How will that make the patient feel” is often a phrase she uses, showing Leesa sees the connection to purpose in the work of WH. Leesa Cooke is the embodiment of WH values and much more.”

“Linda is, without a doubt, an exceptional nurse. Not only does she encompass the Western Health values in her practice, she also goes above and beyond to care for her patients and is a great team player. I was anxious and nervous when I first began working on 2East as a graduate nurse. Linda showed me compassion which was reassuring to me as a new employee. She is extremely compassionate to all her patients, team members, and anyone she encounters. Her integrity and empathy always provided a positive experience for her patients. Being proactive and resourceful is also one of Linda’s many strengths, and she always upheld high standards of care by ensuring she followed best practices. I have never met anyone like Linda who provides such excellence and high-quality care, which inspired and motivated me. I hope to be an exceptional nurse like Linda one day. She consistently displays the utmost respect for her patients from all walks of life and treats them equally. Linda always ensured the safety of her patients and displayed good practice, providing a positive lead and making her a positive role model. I am so thankful to have met a nurse like Linda, who is so giving and helpful and never expects anything in return. She is an overall all rounder and excels in everything she does. Linda is very much adored and valued by her peers.”

Director, Best Care Operations

Lisa was nominated for her role as Project Director, West Metro COVID Vaccination Hub

“Lisa utilised her amazing leadership skills, can-do attitude, and incredible work ethic to deliver the West Metro COVID Vaccination program. In the 2021/22 financial year, the West Metro COVID-19 Vaccination Program led by Western Health administered 1,134,736 doses across the catchment. At its peak, the program employed 250 FTE staff, including nurses, pharmacists, medical and support staff. The activity levels at the three busiest Western Health sites (Sunshine Hospital, Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, and Melbourne Showgrounds) were among the six most busy in the state. Western Health was at the forefront of innovation, opening Australia’s first drive-thru vaccination clinic in Melton. The outreach service worked with local councils and community groups to provide ease of access vaccination opportunities for older members of the community, school children and their families and other high priority groups (including the Aboriginal community and homeless) in locations generally accessed by these groups (such as in-home, shopping centres, schools, festivals, community centres, local pools and parks). Since August 2021, the program has delivered over 570 ‘pop-up’ vaccination clinics across the community, bringing vaccination directly to people who hadn’t yet prioritised it. As a result of an initiative advertising COVID and flu vaccinations through Meals on Wheels and a Letter Box Drop, 162 in-home appointments for COVID and Flu vaccinations have been provided to the elderly since April 2022. Under Lisa’s leadership, the service implemented a custom-purpose vaccination van with provisions for one cubicle inside the van and an external awning for an observation area. It is designed to provide a mobile pop-up service to enable a convenient and accessible vaccination service to the community and the broader public. Another innovation led by the Western Health VicSIS Service was the establishment of the first adult sedation service through collaboration with Disability Liaison Officers and the Day Procedure Unit at Sunshine Hospital and a Paediatric Distraction +/- Sedation clinic, which successfully vaccinates children and adults purely through distraction techniques. The service has received highly positive feedback from clients and families with severe needle phobias and has now delivered significant numbers of successful vaccination episodes through this specialised service.”

Lou is an extraordinary member of the 2A nursing team. Lou is a leader in our EMR committee and has contributed to our ongoing success and compliance with each stage of the EMR rollout. Lou is one of the most compassionate, inclusive, and respectful people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. She does whatever is necessary for her patients, colleagues, and visitors. We recently had a patient pass away, and the patient’s mother asked Lou if she would pray with her. Lou immediately sat with the family, prayed with them, and at the family’s request, supported the mother at the time of the patient’s passing. When the family was unable to source a priest at late and short notice, Lou sourced a priest able to come immediately. Lou genuinely cares about each and every patient and family. She upholds the principles of ‘Best Care’ and is a positive and productive role model. One of the ways I measure a nurse is ‘would I want this nurse to care for my own family?’ I can honestly say that if given a choice of anyone to look after my loved one, Lou would top that list.”

This is evident when the team has discussions about patients – Maddie is aware of the patient’s complexities and ensures they receive the care they need. Respect – Maddie treats each patient with the respect they deserve, whatever their health choices are. This is evident on a daily basis when communicating with her patients. Excellence – her work ethic is outstanding. She is always pleasant to work with regardless of the pressure the day brings, and she ensures she completes her work to a very high standard. Safety – Maddie ensures the safety of her staff by supporting them during their clinic. If they are falling behind, she will try and ask another clinician to see the patient. This ensures that the patient is seen in a timely manner and preserves mental health from stressors of the day. Positive workplace – Maddie sets an exceptional example for her team to promote a positive environment. She listens to their needs and proactively tries to implement measures to support their working environment.”

“Maddie has played a key role in supporting the Western Health focus on diversity throughout the past couple of years. This culminated in managing an excellent piece of design and promotional work to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ activities in May, including IDAHOBIT Day and a social media ‘takeover’. The material produced was of an excellent standard and projected a vibrant and engaging theme throughout. Maddie’s respect for diversity extended to the highly respectful way she developed social media posts, communicated about the activities, and the way she orchestrated an organisation wide dissemination of material. In all of these tasks, Maddie was highly accountable and ensured everything was promoted, delivered, distributed, and published within a complicated set of timelines.”

“It was my first time in the OR due to Covid-19 last year, and I felt quite petrified about getting in the way or affecting the running of the procedures with my presence. Before the procedure, Manisha sought me out to engage me in conversation. She spent time getting to know me as a person and made me feel like I was welcome. She took the time to explain what role she envisaged for me during the procedure, introduced me to the other staff in the room, and stepped me through without overwhelming me. She also took the time to address what I was feeling nervous about and addressed those concerns through reassurance and instruction. Between procedures, she took the time to explain RANZCOG training pathways, tips and tricks as a medical student and junior doctor, and general life advice. She was extremely generous and courteous with other theatre staff and me and took the time to educate and involve me during surgery despite being a trainee herself. She took the time to explain the rationale for the procedure, involved me in assisting (passing tools and retracting), and communicated when she needed to focus on the procedure and when it was appropriate to ask questions so that I felt comfortable, aware of what was going on and part of the team. Manisha went above and beyond what I ever could have expected and made the OR an exciting and wonderful place to be. Manisha’s conduct and attitude are the standards I will strive for in how to treat others in the workplace.”

“I have been working with Michael and Rudy for just over a year. During that time, I have seen how they always present with a positive, respectful, and supportive attitude towards their clients and colleagues. I believe this contributes to fostering a positive workplace in our unit. They both have positive working relationships with their colleagues and managers. I have received specific feedback about their respectful and positive engagement with others within Western Health and external agencies. Michael and Rudy run groups and other activities on the CRWU. They approach this with sound knowledge, positivity, and vigour, especially where our clients may be having difficulty engaging as they will be undergoing substance withdrawal. Michael and Rudy demonstrate daily compassion, good judgement, and skill as they engage with clients who present with different substance and other psychosocial histories. This has been demonstrated on multiple occasions with letters that clients have submitted after their discharge, where Michael and Rudy have been specifically mentioned in terms of their support, engagement, compassion, knowledge, and skill. Michael and Rudy hold our consumer engagement portfolio. To ensure we continue to engage and review our clients’ experience, Michael and Rudy collect surveys completed by clients concerning their experience on the unit to ensure we continue to strive for excellence and provide a positive client experience. Both with family life commitments, including Michael working full time and studying, his work standard has remained high and inspirational. In situations where we have had staffing challenges, Michael and Rudy have not hesitated to step in and support the unit, including assisting in ensuring meals for clients are prepared and supplied to clients on the unit. With the positive feedback received over time, Michael and Rudy remain modest and respectful and are still able to accept and receive support from their colleagues.”

Dental Manager – Melton Health Dental

“Peter has been exceptional in carrying the Dental team throughout the pandemic. We have all felt supported by his kindness and compassion throughout this time, and we all appreciate the time he takes to listen and talk to us individually. Peter treats all his patients with the utmost respect in the dental clinic and community. He is also very respectful towards staff, especially regarding our family. Staff are very apologetic when needing to take time off for family reasons. For example, if their children are sick or school meetings/awards come up at the last minute. Peter always reassures staff that it’s okay and family comes first. This shows Peter’s respect for his staff as people and not just team members, which helps to instill a level of calm within the team. It makes them feel understood with the pressures faced with work and family life balance. Peter is an excellent manager and has supported all staff in all areas. He is a wealth of knowledge and always does his best for our team and the patients.”

Nurse Unit Manager – Ward 1 West

“From the moment Rachel started her role as a Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) in 1 West, she had a vision for education and career growth in her ward. Although COVID had put a hold on her vision, that did not stop her from trying to continue to build on her team’s professional development. She has a strong passion for education and has worked closely with her leadership team and the ward educator to ensure that nursing staff are up to date with education requirements. Rachel displays excellence by fostering team members’ key strengths and encouraging growth and development of skills. She facilitates her team’s development of leadership skills by providing opportunities to do the acting NUM and nurse in charge roles. Rachel is always on the floor, working alongside her team as a leader. She is rarely found in her office, and her door is always open when she is. COVID put a lot of strain on staff with increased sick leave, so Rachel would work on the floor as in charge most days during the peak of COVID to ensure her nursing staff were supported. Even when she was not working in charge on the floor, she would be found most days on the floor helping her team to ensure the safety of staff and patients. Rachel immediately acts on risks (through meetings, emails, education, and audits) to ensure safe patient care is provided, and she keeps her team well updated and values their input. She has hands-on experience with staff complaints/concerns and, as a result, advocates to ensure staff satisfaction and safe patient care. Rachel strongly advocates for her team’s well-being and satisfaction in the workplace through open communication and keeping her team up to date. She listens to her team’s concerns and acts accordingly. This same value is also seen in the way she approaches the care of the patients in her ward. During our first Covid lockdown, Rachel organised times to do an online, face-to-face meeting with families of patients who wanted updates about their parent/partner. She would bring the ward’s tablets to the bedside and ensure that both patient and family were kept updated about the patient’s care. She ensured the patients who came to her ward would be treated as individuals and attempted to address their and their family’s needs. Rachel is considerate and respectful of the multidisciplinary teams that enter the ward and has done a fantastic job integrating their input into patient care through MDT ward meetings. She also welcomes new students and graduates and greets them with a warm smile (even under a mask, you can tell she’s smiling), making them feel at ease. Student nurses have found her so approachable that they often approach her first about concerns before their educator.”

“Bec is a Manger, Educator, and Clinician who regularly demonstrates the Western Health CARES values. Staff wellbeing is always at the forefront of her mind when she initiates, promotes, and implements positive workplace strategies that are innovative, accessible, and practical. These occur within her own team, across Allied Health, and at a broader organisational level. Bec has been instrumental in rolling out The Resilience Project and Culture Hero workshops, hosting numerous wellbeing seminars, leading staff recognition initiatives, and fostering staff connection. Bec demonstrates compassion and kindness for her colleagues, always encouraging them to care for themselves in the midst of a busy work environment. She has supported the Allied Health Profile and Culture Committee in running many uplifting activities throughout the past two years, such as bingo, meditation, and Wordle challenges. She is able to work across and connect with a wide variety of groups and teams in both a clinical role and a clinical education role. This was demonstrated when volunteering to step back into a clinical role as a Senior Physiotherapist in ICU during COVID Peak in 2021. Bec always ensures that staff are acknowledged for the work they do, shares opportunities for staff development, and encourages new ideas. She has established creative methods to allow key Allied Health events to proceed in a COVID-safe manner, notably the Allied Health ‘Thankyou’ lunch and ‘Making a Difference’ peer awards. Bec strives to bring joy to the workplace, and we would like to acknowledge and thank her for her outstanding efforts to make Western Health a wonderful place to work.”

Theatre Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s hospital (JKWC)

“I was petrified as a male medical student entering the Operating Room (OR) for the first time, let alone for obstetrics procedures. As soon as they learned that it was my first time in the OR, they took the time to explain who everyone was, how everything worked, and the procedures that take place at JKWCH each day. They were incredibly compassionate and generous with their time and actively advocated for me to be involved at every stage of the operation. They made me feel welcome, part of the team, and vital to the procedures for these patients. This was despite their many responsibilities in educating other new staff members and their own clinical responsibilities. Clearly, this generosity was extended to all training staff in the room, and it was an absolute pleasure to interact with all three of these wonderful men. To cap it off, it was my birthday – it was the best day I have experienced as a medical student by far!”

Chief Executive (CE) – Western Health

“A long-term employee of WH, Filomena Anania, was sadly diagnosed with a terminal illness. Unfortunately, her treatment was not favourable. I contacted our CE, via email, who responded almost immediately and advised that his secretary would get in touch with me to organise a time to meet with Filomena once he returned to work from leave. As time was critical, I assumed that Russell would forget. A few weeks later, I received an email from his secretary to organise a time for Russell to meet Filomena. The day Russell could come and meet Fil clashed with her appointment; however, his secretary advised that it was not a problem and that Russell would come when Fil was next rostered. We chose May 13th, which ended up being the last time that Fil would be at Western Health (WH). Fil was sick that week and came in on the pretext that I was celebrating my wedding anniversary. Russell displayed so much compassion and respect during that meeting. He made it so casual, just the way Fil liked it. He thanked her for her service, chatted about his family and plans for WH, and included how much he appreciated our hard work. The conversation was so casual; it felt like a visit from an old friend sharing memories of Fil’s ICU days. After he left, Fil and the others around (who did not know Russell’s position) were surprised that a leader came down to visit an employee in such a casual way. That week Russell brought the rainbow to Fil, who had sadly received the news that she only had a couple of months to live. Those moments Russell took to respect and thank Fil were great support and comfort for her and demonstrated the qualities of an excellent and outstanding leader. Russell inspires me through his actions of compassion and kindness. At Western, we know he promotes kindness, and seeing his words in action is truly inspiring and makes me proud to be an employee of Western Health. Russell is the epitome of kindness, a star leadership quality, especially during these challenging times. Sadly Fil passed on July 16th, but with joy, knowing that the CE appreciated all she did for Western Health.”

Nurse Unit Manager – Sunshine ICU

“Sam shows exemplary leadership; this was poignant and highlighted during the last Covid Surge. Her unit expanded by 80% into the Sunshine Theatre Recovery unit, and she managed a team of novice nurses moving into Intensive Care by supporting and nurturing them into her team while deploying a new model of care. Sam is a quiet, inspiring role model who demonstrates ‘best care’ for her patients and their families. She has a strong focus on staff wellbeing and cares deeply for her people, ensuring they are acknowledged and equipped to do the best they can. Sam generates a positive team spirit. Even through an extended period of extremely challenging pressure, when the unit was inundated with Covid cases (including some WH staff members), she remained calm, compassionate, approachable, and in control, ensuring her team received psychological support. Sam led a number of initiatives to create a positive atmosphere and working environment despite the sadness and helplessness of the team. Sam inspires those around her to be the best they can be for their patients and each other. The learner nurses in the ICU look to her for mentorship, and she respectfully guides and develops her team to perform to their best capability whilst advocating for safety and quality, ‘Best Care.’ She acknowledges her accountability for the nursing care in the unit and delivers this responsibility with her leadership team in true partnership and collaboration with the medical, allied health, support services, and administration teams.”

Stacey receive two nominations for an Inspire Award:

Nomination 1:

“Stacey has a wonderfully bright and bubbly attitude that never fails to lift the spirits of everyone in the team. But alongside this, Stacey has taken her role within the Occupational Therapy Culture committee and enthusiastically led culture improvement within her team. Stacey recognised that we couldn’t do our usual social events within the team like we used to and has found new ways to foster social connection. She researches different food events in her own time and comes up with fun, Covid-safe ways to celebrate. Italian food on ‘World Lasagna day’ and hot chocolates on ‘national chocolate day’ were particular highlights. These small events lift the team’s spirits, provide great opportunities for sharing stories and help the team to check in on and support each other.”

Nomination 2:

“Stacey’s bright and friendly manner has been a welcome pick me up within our team during recent times. Stacey goes out of her way to ensure everyone is feeling welcome and included, improving the experience of team members and contributing to a positive workplace. She has planned many spontaneous “International day of the …” to involve members of the team, keeping us well fed, rested and connected as a team. We thank Stacey for her endless stories and working well within the many teams that she is a part of.”

Registered Nurses – Ward 1A

Monica Kiplagat PICTURE CREDIT : Penny Stephens – www.bypennystephens.com

A patient had the following to say about Sue and Monica:

“Sue and Monica were highly professional and thoroughly explained much of what was going on. I felt very secure with them, especially Sue, who has been nursing for quite a long time. They were concerned because I wanted to sleep in the chair, which was more comfortable than the bed. When I explained that lying in bed was just too painful, they respected my decision and didn’t force me to do so. On the occasions that I got into bed, I would get tangled up in the bedding, and when Sue saw the problem, she remade the bed for me without any fuss. They both took the time to ensure I understood what was happening and what they were doing, like when they were issuing medication or asking questions in general. Sue and Monica were incredibly kind and compassionate and made my hospital stay as comfortable as possible. I truly appreciate all they did for me.”

Tara was nominated twice for her role as Acting Manager Adult Health:

Nomination 1:

“Tara took on an acting role as manager over the past year during a time of high stress and constant change and flux. During this time, she was always respectful towards the team and the manager she was acting for. She did this by demonstrating it herself and working collaboratively with the team. This leadership developed a strong team dynamic and support for implementing system changes in line with funding changes and transition needs. The implemented changes will support the community services as they grow and expand. This demonstration of excellence and accountability has supported the manager in stepping back into the role. Tara is a person you can go to for support. She is always willing to help patients and colleagues and is a pleasure to work with.”

Nomination 2:

“Tara is compassionate and caring and someone who will give you a hug if needed. She is one of the few people I know that if you ask a question, you will get an answer with no need to question it. And if you do, it is discussed, and you are never shut down because of her role as Acting Manager. Other entities in MCHC even approach Tara as she has knowledge and years of experience that spans not just Physiotherapy Acute but community services as well. She has been a source of knowledge I didn’t know I needed. “

“Terhas goes above and beyond her role and is a valued and respected team member in the Transit Lounge. Compassion – Terhas is integral to the comfort and experience of the patients who move through the transit lounge. She offers them food and drinks (and ensures the pantry and fridge are well stocked), assists with transferring patients, and ensures they are warm enough by providing blankets. These may seem like simple tasks, but it is often the simple tasks that are missed when we are busy. Her positive and joyful attitude is a pleasure to be around for staff, patients and visitors. Accountability – Terhas has exceptional attention to detail, and she takes on initiatives without needing to be asked. She is a hard worker, and her flexibility to move from task to task and take on additional support roles, i.e., monitoring and advising of broken equipment and completing stocktaking on pantry items, enables others to fulfill their jobs. Excellence – Most significantly, the entire staff involved within the Transit Lounge value Terhas’ positivity and “can-do” attitude. Alongside the COVID-19 Infusion clinic, the CPP has been an integral component of Western Health’s COVID-19 community response, resulting in over 8376 patients receiving care being monitored safely in their homes without the need to attend a hospital for care. The Chronic and Complex Care Division has ensured that patients receive best and timely care and reduced the risk of adverse events and hospitalisations of patients in our community. The team was supported by Tessa, a truly authentic, dynamic, and inspirational leader. “Tilly Anderson is hard working, compassionate, and inspiring, not only for her exceptional clinical and technical abilities but also for the way she treats all those around her, patients and staff alike. She showed exceptional abilities stepping up to cover leave in the UGIG Fellow role during a challenging time for the entire team, with the extra pressures of Covid 19 restrictions on top of an already busy workload and after completing her final surgical exams. Throughout this, she showed extraordinary leadership qualities, not only in her ability to keep the team afloat but also in supporting and encouraging her team members to be the best that they could be. She did this all without any fuss or recognition while simultaneously managing the pressure of a busy workload and the pressures of family life. Toni was nominated for her previous role as Nurse Unit Manager – Ward 2F

“Toni consistently promotes staff wellness. She organises “pork roll Thursdays,” ordering banh mi rolls for the ward nurses, doctors, PSA’s, and bed managers, and she has set up a wellness station in her office, with various teas and snacks available for the team. In the past (pre that nasty pandemic), Toni often had staff get-togethers at her house, arranging “Ponies at Toni’s,” where she would encourage staff to bring their families to her farm for a BBQ and horse riding. Tony is very dedicated and works a ridiculous amount of hours, usually 10-12hrs a day, as she always wants the ward to be in the best position to succeed and be a safe environment. She is prepared and able to have difficult conversations with upper management to push for a better, safer work environment for her staff. Toni has built positive relationships with all her employees. She regularly completes staff “well-being” check-ins to ensure everyone is okay and has an ‘open door policy.’ Toni takes criticism on board, no matter who it is providing to her. She genuinely cares about how she is perceived and how her actions impact others. She offers many opportunities for feedback through emails, surveys, and general conversations and takes the input she receives into account in future planning. Toni is involved in multiple projects. In the past, she has been actively involved in the “pajama paralysis” and “quiet wards” projects. Toni is always looking for ways to improve the ward and is passionate about staff safety. She will check in with staff after every OHS issue and encourages everyone to use the different services available at Western Health. i.e., EAP and EMPOWIR. Toni genuinely cares about the well-being of staff and their development and encourages staff to be involved in different projects. She is willing to help them achieve their career goals, even if this inevitably means they may leave the ward.”

“During the past 12 months, Val has been the Education & Learning Manager – Women’s and Children’s Team and the Acting Director of Education and Learning from January to July 2022. She demonstrated excellent clinical leadership during this time by guiding the wider education team to provide meaningful educational experiences. This included overseeing education programs within the nursing and midwifery domains. Using her positive nature and approachable leadership style, she fostered improved bedside care and instilled a positive workplace culture for the education team. Although COVID has been a barrier to providing education programs during this time, Val demonstrated persistence to ensure that educational programs continued within the constraints of the COVID restrictions. Val has demonstrated all the WH values. Compassion – Val has a compassionate nature. During the past 12 months, several team members have fallen ill, and she has personally contacted them or their families to see if she could provide support. She demonstrated understanding and compassion when staff or learners (that the teams are responsible for) required additional educational support and coordinated this. Accountability – Val is a true leader by taking accountability for when programs are well run and when programs could be improved and has provided additional resources for the educational programs run within the division to ensure improved learner experience. Respect – Val is very respectful towards the education staff and the learners she is responsible for. When seeking guidance about a learner and their progression within a program, she is always respectful with the information provided and when offering guidance to the learners. Safety – during the past 12 months, the organisational requirement to alter workforce planning and recruitment has been challenging. Val has been a leader in getting RN’s working within the midwifery areas while adhering to the EBA and ANMF requirements. She always ensures that patients and pregnant women are provided with excellent care to improve their outcomes and decrease LOS as required. Val has been an excellent colleague and leader over the past 12 months. Without her guidance and leadership, the education and learning team would not have been able to provide education support to graduate nurses, midwives, new staff, and existing staff.”

“Valentina has a wealth of knowledge and experience in Procurement, particularly in Tender management, which she utilises and shares successfully with the larger team to ensure excellent outcomes that impact Western Health (WH) in many ways. Valentina always ensures that actions are followed up in a timely manner and always has time to support the team to achieve outcomes that will benefit the WH community. Many complex Procurement processes would not be possible without Valentina’s input, and many have learned from her leadership in this area.”

“The Nursing team at 3F has gone over and above the Western Health. They have a can-do attitude, delivering care during the most difficult of circumstances during wave 3 of the C-19 pandemic. Specifically, the day they cared for seven patients (at once) requiring high-level non-invasive ventilatory supports that would be managed in ICU as HDU level in normal times. They did so in a manner characteristic of their group: togetherness and a smile. They display genuine compassion and empathy for the long journey towards recovery that their patients experience. They display Accountability by escalating in a timely manner to medical and nursing teams if their patients require further support based on clinical judgement “and the nursing gut feeling” that they have developed and honed for years and years. They demonstrate Excellence as time and again, when the demands for the health service are at an all-time high, they rise to the occasion and adapt to deliver higher level care and support to the sickest of the sick in the wards.”

Western Public Health Unit (WPHU)

“The Data Epidemiology and Surveillance (DES) team in the Western Public Health Unit (WPHU) has excelled and innovated in an enormously stressful environment. DES has revolutionised reporting of COVID-19 not only within WPHU but state-wide. The reports and metrics they have developed have resulted in better outbreak responses (with consequently fewer cases), better targeting of vaccination efforts, and a better understanding of engagement with the COVID response across Victoria. DES has done this while building a supportive team culture in which everyone contributes to the limit of their scope. They have maintained humour and morale during periods of intense stress and built skills within the team, across WPHU, and in epidemiology teams in the Department of Health (DH) and other local public health units (LPHUs). Formed in the weeks before the 2021 COVID-19 outbreaks started, DES initially had minimal access to data or systems on which reports could be built and disseminated. With the sudden rise in outbreaks and cases in May 2021, DES discovered and used novel techniques for data extraction from the COVID case and contact database. They then pioneered linking data pertaining to outbreak settings, cases, and contacts with PCR-test information from another large dataset (extending to many millions of rows). Linking testing, case, contact, and outbreak data allowed visibility on the status of all outbreaks in Victoria. For the first time in Victoria, the COVID response was able to automatically visualise – for each separate outbreak – how many cases there were, how many contacts had been identified, and how many contacts had returned a negative test, as well as all the important dates associated with such data. Using these reports, outbreak managers could identify gaps and divert resources to where the most risk lay. As the COVID response moved to an emphasis on vaccination, DES developed reporting that allowed stakeholders to understand vaccination among key sections of the WPHU community and to direct resources accordingly. DES has developed novel metrics to gauge community engagement adopted by DH and has provided key insights to direct activities state-wide. DES has worked closely with fledgling epidemiology teams in other LPHUs to build skills and orientate staff. They have also worked with DH, advocating for data access, ensuring safety and careful data governance, and sharing knowledge and local context to guide the COVID response. To summarise, DES demonstrate all the Western Health values, working in a non-clinical, public health environment, in particular: Compassion – Understanding the urgency of the COVID outbreak and how its effects are felt more by the disadvantaged; working tirelessly to improve WPHU’s ability to understand the outbreaks and direct effort to where it will have the most effect. Accountability – Identifying novel ways to solve problems and determine needs; following through on the development of complex reports; working for extended hours when the crisis hit. Respect – Communicating findings to demonstrate inequity in engagement in WPHU and advocate for resource allocation that improves equity. Excellence – Development of novel, complex reports that are adopted across Victoria; elevating the skills of those in the team; extending the capacity of other LPHUs, DH, and WPHU. Safety – Ensuring large datasets are governed well, maintaining security whilst using the insights. A positive workplace – Maintaining humour and professionalism in an immensely stressful environment; treating each other and all those in WPHU with respect and patience.”

“With ever increasing complexities presenting to Hand Therapy, the team always seeks to support each other and solve problems to ensure the best outcomes for presenting patients. They constantly demonstrate compassion for their colleagues and patients alike. When caseloads have blown out, others often step in to assist. During times when exhaustion takes hold, they are quick to bring a coffee, gift, card, or gesture of their understanding. They are always empathetic toward their patients and work to accommodate a patient’s requests as best practicable. Despite hectic clinical and administrative loads, they always ensure documentation and stats are completed to the required levels, often working beyond their set hours to achieve this. Supervision and monthly contributions to professional development have continued throughout the pandemic to ensure accountability in an ever changing clinical area. The team demonstrates great respect for each other and the skill and knowledge base each member has accumulated over time, often seeking to learn from one another and acknowledging individual achievements as they occur. The team strives to achieve excellence, and ‘best care’ is paramount to each treatment session. Patient cases are always discussed to ensure problems are solved using an evidence-based approach, and where areas of concern arise, they are bounced back to the Plastics team for additional support. The team is proactive at identifying areas where safety may be a concern and consistently seek to problem solve solutions. Overall, the Hand Therapy team is incredibly compassionate and supportive. Each member contributes varying strengths making it a positive place to be each day, making the hard times during past Covid lockdowns easier to bear. “

“Earlier this year, we officially completed the Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Plan for 2019-21. This was an ambitious plan, and we were able to accomplish 25 actions and introduce many initiatives that have been pivotal to Western Health being able to maintain and enhance our nursing and midwifery workforce status despite the many challenges of the pandemic and our continuing rapid growth. The outcomes that were achieved by Lisa, Michelle, and the NMWU included: Enhanced support for our nurses and enhanced care and graduate pipeline via RUSON role – where the team ensured huge numbers were recruited; First health service to introduce the RUSOM role into maternity to support our midwives – with the team again supporting huge numbers to be recruited; Freed up Unit Manager’s time, enhanced candidate experience, and reduced vacancy timelines via centralised recruitment; Supported recruitment for the newly introduced Enrolled Nurse early career program; Significantly reduced reliance on agency and enhanced entry pathways via expanding Pool; Enhanced utilisation of Bank via forward planning of roster vacancy management; Introduced Health-e Workforce Solutions to proactively plan and support effective workforce management. All of this was undertaken during a year when the number of staffing requests associated with COVID surge more than tripled – which were consistently filled! Western Health’s workforce status is the envy of other health services, which is largely due to the efforts of these remarkable people.”

“These three remarkable team members constantly and consistently display positivity within the workplace. They are the centre of everything and contribute to everyone and everything that happens within the ward. They greet patients with respect, kindness, and compassion and promote dignity and respect for the individual. They are the first point of contact, be it by phone or in person, and therefore are the carriers of the burden of the 7-second first impression for us all. They are never found wanting and always make people feel welcome, listened to, and actually heard. During COVID and the associated visitor restrictions, they often pick up phones to very frustrated and distressed relatives; each and every one of them is a powerful champion for de-escalation, tolerance, and understanding. They can often defuse a situation by simply sourcing a cordless phone, setting up a FaceTime call, or returning a call at an agreed time. These are incredibly challenging times for us all, and I would not be able to do my job as effectively without the entire team, but I am especially grateful for these extraordinary humans that sit beside me every day and make my and others, lives just that much easier.”

“I returned to academic studying last year after 25 years and was very nervous. The Western Health (W Library Team noticed I had requested a few articles, and they reached out to me asking if I needed further help. I found their emails warm, friendly and encouraging. I felt very well supported in my study, and it was a very positive workplace experience. Ilana provided me with a custom Google Scholar link they had created to make searching for full articles easier. I was able to use this link with great success throughout my study. When I did request an article, the team answered my email within 24 hours. On one occasion, my article was unavailable, and Lynn researched a replacement article with similar content to send to me. I was really impressed with this level of personalised service, demonstrating excellence and compassion in supporting the employees of WH with academic study and certainly improving my experience of higher education. The WH Library Team demonstrates a high standard of service when they are helping others to learn and improve.”

“The Community Health Nursing team has consistently demonstrated respect and care for one another during these challenging times. Each team member makes contact with others in the team to make sure they are coping with their work life and life outside of work. If a need is identified, they work together to support the staff member in whatever way they can. This supportive and respectful attitude to their work colleagues encourages mental health safety within the team and compassion of a very high standard. Each staff member is flexible and is willing to take on new challenges, for example, speaking to over 200 high school students about vaping. Another example of excellence is ensuring that the community is well informed about new and emerging health issues. This team creates a safe place for new community members to learn about the Australian way of life, focusing on health systems and building community for them.”

“I was redeployed to this ward during the first Covid lockdown. During this highly stressful time for patients and staff, this team showed me such kindness and welcomed me as one of their own. I cannot thank them enough. Only Category 1 patients were coming to the hospital at this time without family support, so the extreme care shown to everyone was outstanding. The nursing team and, in particular, the Associate Nurse Unit Managers were outstanding. Their kindness, respect, and level of care provided under intense pressure were inspirational and demonstrated what ‘best care’ is.”

“All the food service staff, in general, continue to provide great support to the dietitians ( always with a smile ) at the Williamstown campus. They will often alert the dietitians to patients having difficulties ordering and consuming meals. Natalia Stojackovic, the food service manager, will often go above and beyond her normal duties to assist the dietitians with their requests to meet their patients’ special dietary needs. For example, they will source foods that are not freely available and order from other sites. The staff will often stop their current work to print out a weekly supply of menus for patient carers who visit to fill out in a short time frame. The menu monitors will alert the dietitians if they have any concerns regarding patients who are not consuming their high protein drink supplements or extra snacks or are not happy with their meal plans. The menu monitors will also add requested extras to meal trays at short notice and ensure that the tray is accurate and appropriate. They will follow up with the dietitian if they have a query about a patient’s diet code. Nothing is too much trouble, and they are always happy to accommodate dietetic requests to improve patient satisfaction and safety. They are a pleasure to work with and outstanding support to our department.”

“I was redeployed to Ward 1West at Footscray hospital during Covid redeployment. This ward has an outstanding culture that is led from the top. The ward faced many challenges and difficulties yet continued to provide a work environment that displayed respect to one another and all patients. The unit worked under challenging times, with types of patients being cared for, new staff, constant changes, the physical environment, and ward layout, yet continued to show high work standards, resilience, teamwork, communication, advocating for patients, and continuing to be positive. A huge thank you to a wonderful team who need to be recognised and acknowledged for their ongoing hard work.”

“The Transit Lounge was set up very quickly in March 2022. The nursing staff involved have shown their willingness to adapt to changes rapidly with smiles, laughter, and grace. They have demonstrated the values of Western Health: Accountability – The nursing staff have had many changes in the six months of operation, including location, process, and leadership changes. Although such changes can be very unsettling, the Transit Lounge nursing staff have taken it in their stride with a positive and adaptable attitude. This attitude has resulted in the success of the initial trial and the expansion for the next 12 months. Respect – The Nursing team in the transit lounge has a great spirit. Feedback from staff who move through the Transit Lounge is that all staff (students/grads/bank/pool) are respected and valued for the work that they do. The staff look after each other and “have each others back.” They are often asked to work across areas, such as Covid Positive Infusion clinics and Covid Positive Pathways, and this is done with enthusiasm and willingness. Excellence – Patient-centred care remains at the forefront of the Transit Lounge staff, and the feedback received from patients is exceptional. Patients value the care and time the staff takes to address patients’ needs at that time. For example, following up with treating teams, calling taxis, and ‘outside the box’ thinking to ensure patients get to their destinations on time. It can be a long wait for some patients (many hours), yet the staff leave a positive last impression of Western Health when patients are discharged home.”

“The Covid Positive Pathways (CPP) team has provided invaluable care to over 8,000 Covid-19 Positive patients in the community since September 2021. The multidisciplinary team consists of staff from across various services within the Chronic and Complex Care Division. During the peak of the omicron wave on a given day, 45 staff members banded together to monitor over 600 medium-risk patients in the community. The team demonstrated excellence in patient care, with the provision of daily monitoring phone calls and timely escalation to advice, medication, and time-critical care. Staff remained accountable for the provision of patient care within existing services whilst pivoting and flexing to support the CPP team during Covid peaks. The pathways team displayed compassion and individualised care to patients, with patients and their families expressing thanks and gratitude for the support and reassurance the team provided during a scary time in patients’ lives. The team has ensured patients receive best and timely care, reducing avoidable hospital presentations and reducing the risk of adverse events for Covid positive patients in our community.”

“The Nutrition Nurse Champions have varying years of nursing experience and are from various clinical areas across adult wards at Western Health. They have approached their role with a positive mindset, willingness to learn, and focus on engaging their nursing colleagues. As a group, the Nutrition Nurse Champions have determined the best approach to working together to improve the weighing and malnutrition screening of patients, ensuring a positive mealtime environment, and promoting nutrition across the organisation. The Nutrition Nurse Champions were established in 2016, and initially, there were 32 champions. Over the past five years, this number has grown yearly, with 80% of the original champions still recruited to this role. The Nutrition Nurse Champions are an excellent nutrition resource at the ward level for their nursing colleagues. They provide nutrition task updates at handover, promote the importance of weighing and malnutrition screening, and some have created nutrition communication boards to promote good nutrition for patients. They have creatively identified what education strategy works for their wards to foster teamwork and engagement, and they share their ideas at Nutrition Study days with fellow champions. Nutrition is one of the nine domains of Comprehensive Care at Western Health. As part of the education and training for the Nutrition Nurse Champions, they were presented with the Western Health Malnutrition Strategy and data on the malnutrition risk of WH patients. In addition, the results of weighing and malnutrition screening of patients at the ward level in 2016 were well below the 80% KPI target. The champions positively undertook the task of improving weighing and malnutrition screening of patients at the ward level, which has required several approaches over the years to ensure its sustainability. They now conduct monthly, admission, and weekly patient weight audits and participate in other audits related to meal time preparedness and MST accuracy. The Nutrition Nurse champions are a key resource at the ward level for the nutrition department and nursing staff. As part of their role, they attend biannual nutrition study days conducted by the Nutrition department to receive up-to-date nutrition information, to assist with the prevention and management of malnutrition for patients, and other key tasks to ensure quality nutrition care for patients. The champions share their experiences from the ward level these days and have the opportunity to learn with, from, and about each other. There have been difficulties at times with how to overcome certain barriers, such as weighing patients, but as a group, they have discussed, trialed, and come up with workable solutions. The nutrition champions have demonstrated excellence in undertaking this role with a significant improvement in weighing of patients across the organisation from 55% for admission and 44% for weekly weighs in 2015 to 75% for admission and 88% for weekly weighing of patients in 2020. The Nutrition Nurse Champions ensure their patients understand the importance of good nutrition during their hospital care and utilise resources such as Eating Well in Hospital. They demonstrate collective support for each other as a group, and from satisfaction surveys, overwhelming feel their role is important in implementing the Western Health Malnutrition Strategy and can make changes at the ward level. The Nutrition Nurse Champions communicate respectfully with each other, their nursing colleagues, and patients, respect their role’s importance and bring enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.”

COVID Vaccination Hub

“Over the past couple of years, this amazing team did a spectacular job of administratively supporting the COVID Vaccination program – which at its peak employed over 250 FTE of staff and administered over 1.4 million vaccination doses across the catchment. Western Health’s sites included three of the six busiest in the state and were at the forefront of innovation, opening Australia’s first drive-thru vaccination clinic in Melton. On top of this, they also undertook significant work and long hours behind the scenes supporting the implementation, data management, and introduction of new administrative systems to support Western Health’s management of the first mandated vaccine in Victoria. This was a significant task, with over 11,000 staff needing to be vaccinated by receiving three doses! Whilst this, in many ways, was a thankless task, the team worked tirelessly to ensure that data reports were kept accurate and up to date, professionally and respectfully answered queries from staff, remained positive despite adversity and demonstrated a real commitment to excellence in their standard of work. They knew that the COVID vaccine was a game changer in terms of improving staff safety and were committed to getting the job done.”

“I have never felt so good coming to work as in this unit. They are a bunch of happy nurses who work together as a team. The managers are compassionate, family orientated, and approachable to the max. I retired in 2018, and after 11 months, I needed to go back as I missed them all, staff and patients but mostly staff. Then my husband passed away, and the staff supported me through my grieving time. They were my therapy, more than my direct family. This team is excellent with patients – how they treat and care for patients, family members, and carers, but mainly how they care about the patient’s well-being. They are also very respectful towards everyone – of any religion or nationality. I am so proud of this unit and could work here for many more years. No one wants to leave this unit. It’s a happy place to work.”

“Majd, Rummy, and the WeLearn team went above and beyond the call of duty and worked hard, tirelessly, and overtime to facilitate the seamless and smooth onboarding of new Junior Medical Officers in January and February at the height of the Omicron Covid-19 wave when Western Health was desperate for new reinforcements. All-in-all, the team created 350+ new WeLearn accounts. Throughout the entire Junior Medical Staff (JMS) Orientation and onboarding process, Majd and Rummy maintained a positive, ‘can do’ attitude. Despite very late notice and tight constraints, Majd, Rummy, and the team were able to deliver all account creations ahead of schedule and on time for JMS Orientation. Their service delivery was to the highest standard. Majd and Rummy demonstrated outstanding compassion for the difficulties and challenges faced by Medical Workforce in facilitating timely onboarding and bulk account creation. Without this team’s exemplary efforts, Junior Medical Officers would not have been able to complete their mandatory competencies and online EMR modules before they commenced their first clinical shift, thereby endangering patients and compromising safety across the organisation.”

“Linda was my Consultant in my first internship rotation, in the middle of the Code Brown COVID surge in January. Despite the Aged Care teams being busier than they’d ever been, she took extreme care to make sure that we (the new interns) felt supported and could ask any/all questions we had. She worked just as hard as her juniors on the team and her leadership ensured our team worked effectively together through many challenges. In my third or fourth week on the job, amongst the chaos of our busy ward, Linda took the time to have lunch with me one-on-one and discuss how I was finding my job, what I was finding hard and what I was hoping to achieve out of my rotation. Her empathetic and compassionate mentorship was really impactful for me, hence why I am nominating her for this award. In my experience Linda absolutely encompasses all of the CARES values, but some specific examples include: Compassion: in her incredibly kind, patient and empathetic approach to her patients and their families, especially around difficult discussions and end of life care. Her mentorship (as described above) was also done from a place of kindness and compassion. Accountability: During my first few weeks of work I made a small, but not insignificant mistake (thankfully not one that resulted in patient harm). Linda noticed this error, and instead of reprimanding me, she took the time to discuss what had happened, why it mattered and helped me to rectify the mistake. In this way she held me accountable in my clinical practice, but she did so in such a compassionate way that I left that encounter feeling like I’d had a valuable learning experience rather than been reprimanded by my boss. Respect: Linda demonstrated the utmost respect for all her colleagues from every level, and especially her junior staff. She sought our input and perspective and involved us in decision making for the patients under our care. Excellence: Linda worked to an incredibly high level both clinically and inter-professionally whilst also managing her teaching and research supervision roles. Somehow she did all of this whilst being a reliably kind, humorous and warm presence in our team. Safety: Linda took a systematic approach to her work that ensured things were not missed and safe processes were followed. She also emphasised safety in her teaching and mentorship, and worked alongside us to review things like medication reconciliation documents to ensure that prescribing errors weren’t made. In summary, Linda has left a profound and lasting impact on my time at Western and was a guiding light during a very tough and very busy first rotation. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

“My Father was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease in October 2020 and given only a matter of weeks to live. He lived in the country with minimal experienced support for him in the hospital system. He was sent to a nursing home to die at the age of 70. I knew my dad didn’t have a long time, but I wanted the time he did have to be memorable with improved quality. I transferred him closer to me in metropolitan Melbourne and sought the assistance of Palliative Care Consultants at Western Health when he was admitted for deterioration in November 2020. He had multiple ascetic taps to assist with pain and comfort due to the fluid accumulation, and I knew there had to be a better way. Dr. Maria Coperchini accepted my dad into Sunshine Palliative Care Unit, where I thought he would die, but no, she arranged for a pleurex to be placed to make regular drainage easier. Dad was able to guide the ward staff regarding his symptoms and when they needed to access and drain his asities. This gave him back some independence and control, even if short-lived. He was able to get out for Christmas day with the family and walk to the cafeteria for his snacks, something he hadn’t been able to do for three months. I even lost him in the local supermarket; he was walking so well again, all be it with a frame. My dad wanted to die back in his hometown. With the assistance of Dr. Coperchini and her dedicated team, my dad returned to the country and lived in a nursing home with some independence and comfort for four weeks before his peaceful passing on 31/1/21. Instead of weeks, I got four months of memories with my dad that I will cherish forever. I can’t describe my gratitude for Dr. Coperchini and the team. They gave me extra time with my dad I would never have gotten if he had stayed where he was. He would not have experienced the love of his family nor got to say goodbye the way he wanted to if it wasn’t for their respect, compassion, and excellence in palliative care support. It is so much more than dying; it’s holistic care that is so often underestimated.”

“On two occasions over the past eight months, the company that collects clinical waste from Western Health sites experienced significant disruption after incidents at their main treatment facility. This resulted in periods where minimal collections of Clinical Waste were undertaken, and a considerable build-up of clinical waste had to be handled on-site. The Environmental Services Waste Teams, under the leadership of their respective Site Managers and Operations Manager, swung into action. As a result, at a time of increased generation of clinical waste due to COVID, the ESD  Waste teams put in a superhuman effort to minimise disruption of our clinical services. Utilising solid problem-solving skills and an absolutely AWESOME ‘can do’ attitude, the Western Health Clinical teams were able to continue their work without interruption despite the fact that in the background, clinical waste was piling up at a fast rate and, in some cases was filling some rooms from floor to ceiling with full bags of clinical waste. This was extremely hard work; however, the ESD Waste teams donned the appropriate PPE and just got on with the job. Everyone pitched in and showed great teamwork and consideration for each other. The saying “nobody knows what they do until they don’t do it” encapsulates these teams across Western Health. They just got on with the job and made sure that our clinical teams were able to continue their work. Western Health experienced less disruption than other Health Services in Melbourne during this time, which is entirely due to the unsung heroes of the Environmental Services Team, particularly the Waste Management people.”

Senior Orthopaedic Technologist

John received three nominations:

Nomination 1:

With over 40 years of experience working at Footscray Hospital as an Orthopaedic Technologist, John creates a positive workplace every single day with his wonderful sense of humour, positive attitude, vast knowledge of his field, and dedication to his patients. As a senior orthopaedic technologist, he is a fantastic teacher and mentor to many staff and demonstrates excellence in the outcomes of his casting work. His respect and compassion for patients and his philosophy of always ensuring that casts and appliances are safe and effective is something that resonates with the entire orthopaedic technologist team.

Nomination 2:

John always maintains a positive mindset toward work and is great at finding solutions to challenging problems. His humour and personality keep the rest of the team in great spirits even on the toughest days. John is an excellent teacher and expects work to be done to the highest standard with close attention to detail; however, he is also very patient with his team so that we don’t feel pressured or overwhelmed. He treats his team, as well as all the other departments we work with, as equals and ensures that everyone’s concerns are heard and addressed. John always acknowledges a job well done and has taught his team to value the safety of all patients and ourselves whenever we are applying/removing orthotics.

Nomination 3:

John shows compassion toward his patients. Working in the plaster room to apply casts to patients with broken bones involves patience and awareness of the pain and discomfort that the patient may have. John has a way of explaining and making the patient at ease so that he can provide the best practice cast application. John also exemplifies excellence in his craft as an Orthopaedic Technologist. There is a lot to learn about orthopaedics; with his experience, he can teach anyone almost anything about fractures and how to manage them conservatively. That is why he has teaching engagements all over Australia and overseas prior to Covid. I am proud to be one of his colleagues and have developed my skills under his watch.

In late September 2022 a complex trauma case presented to the Sunshine Hospital with penetrating trauma and lacerated wrists, and of a severity that is uncommon in Australian healthcare settings.

Many multidisciplinary teams across many specialities came together working cooperatively utilising their collective expertise to care for this patient to provide trauma emergency management of the highest standard.

So many individuals have played a vital role in saving this patient’s life – too numerous to name individually. The incredible joint efforts of:

  • Sunshine Emergency Department – who provided exceptional emergency management, early activation of a trauma call and early activation of the massive transfusion protocol
  • Sunshine Theatre staff – This patient spent the best part of twelve hours in the operating theatre on the day of her admission and made five return trips to the operating theatre in the days following her initial presentation.
  • The efforts of the Sunshine Hospital laboratory staff – particularly blood bank staff, who in the first 12 hours prepared and provided over 33 units of red blood cells for transfusion, 24 units of fresh frozen plasma, 31 units of Cryoprecipitate, plus multiple bags of pooled platelets. Since admission the patient has received approximately 136 requests for blood products to date.
  • The Patient Support staff – collected and transported the patient to and from the emergency department, theatre and the ICU.
  • The Intensive Care team – who have provided ongoing clinical care, and who played an instrumental role in the coordination of the care of this patient; and
  • The Medical Imaging team – who scanned the patient in CT, did a mobile chest x-ray in ICU, contributed to diagnostics and intervention, and continues to provide support while the patient remains in ICU.

The patient remains in a stable condition in the ICU at Sunshine Hospital and is clinically improving thanks to the amazing efforts of the multidisciplinary teams involved in her care.
